Cedar Rapids Comic Con is the Midwest’s most affordable comic book, gaming, and all things nerdy convention.
Cedar Rapids Comic Con got its start in February 2015. That year, our organizers held a small test event at NewBo City Market called “NewBo Con.” The event was organized to determine if Cedar Rapids and the rest of Eastern Iowa would support and embrace a comic and gaming convention. That year, nearly 3,500 people attended, supporting our idea that a convention in Cedar Rapids was possible.
In 2016, the event moved to the Cedar Rapids DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel & Convention Center. With the new space, came a new name: Cedar Rapids Comic Con. The event hosted 85 vendors selling video games, board games, clothing, toys, and all sorts of other things related to nerd culture.
For 2017, we added event more space. We hosted more than 140 vendor booth spaces (plus an artists alley), a giant gaming room with tables of scheduled and opening gaming (RPGS, board games, etc), a dedicated video game room, and our massive speakers/session/panels room.
In 2017, more than 10,000 people from all over the Midwest (and from as far away as Washington state, California, and Texas swarmed on Cedar Rapids for a weekend filled with nerd and geek friendly activities. The convention itself hosted comic artists and writers, vendors selling nerdy collectibles, and experts in fields relating to the comic book, sci-fi, fantasy, and gaming world. Simply put, if it’s nerdy… it can be found at Cedar Rapids Comic Con.
In 2017, we also added our affiliate events in partnership with area organizations like Orchestra Iowa (which hosted Video Games Live for its first show in Iowa), the Cedar Rapids Public Library (which hosted nerd trivia night, and nerdy film screenings), the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders (the local hockey team, which held its Star Wars night the night before CRCC) and the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library (which hosted comic book themed events for children and adults).
